Thirst amidst plentiful water in Maboane

MABOANE: School children here are forced to travel at least four kilometers every morning to fetch water from the only standpipe in the village, said area councillor Mogomotsi Makgolele last week.

Makgolele was speaking to Mmegi at his home amid the campaign for parliamentary by-election scheduled for this coming weekend. Maboane is a small village approximately 50kms west of Letlhakeng. It has a population of just over 1,800 residents.

According to Makgolele, connecting a tap to one's house is a futile exercise because all the water is pumped to Jwaneng which is 30kms away, to water mine operations.
