The politics of water

With the general elections just a few months away, the water crisis may just be another electoral issue, reports MARANYANE NGWANAAMOTHO

"The country could have invested in water and electricity around the 1980s when the country still had money. We could afford it then. But now other than water and electricity there are other pressing matters which make it even difficult," he said, adding, "now we are paying heavily for the failures of the BDP leadership," argues Botswana National Front (BNF) spokesperson, Moeti Mohwasa.

He contends that provision of water and electricity should be some of the top electoral issues at the next polls. He says that the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) leadership has failed to see the need to invest in water and electricity in the past hence the current crisis. He relates that since as far back as 1969, the BNF has been pressing for investment in the much-needed resources while the BDP failed to share the vision. Mohwasa says now the country is facing serious water and electricity challenges coupled with other pressing matters.
