Batswana students were being kicked out of classrooms at the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS), and had nowhere to go, except to return home. The year was 1976 and the Prime Minister Leabua Jonathan had been acting strangely for some time, warning that his government would nationalise UBLS. After several years of warnings, he finally did.

Back home, the government was adamant that there was no money to build an expensive higher institution of learning. Compounding the problem was the fact that the public knew very little about the importance of a university, let alone that of education. 

“Politicians were against the introduction of tertiary education in the country, and they bombarded the public with propaganda that children should go and herd cattle,” says retired senior civil servant Dr Potlako Molefhe.
