The executive secretary of Tertiary Education Council (TEC) Dr Patrick Molutsi has defended private colleges from accusations that they hire incompetent managers lecturers.

He dismissed claims that first degree holders cannot teach in the colleges. He said there is nothing wrong with first degree holders as lecturers in the colleges as long as they teach appropriate courses. The TEC boss explained that first degree lecturers fit well in a college that offers diploma courses.

"Most of the colleges we have registered offer mainly diploma courses or Associate Degrees. So a first degree holder can teach a diploma student. Mind you, some of the courses they offer are certificate ones. This means a diploma holder can be hired to teach certificate courses. There is nothing wrong with that," Molutsi said. He denied that first degree lecturers are teaching undergraduates and said he should be alerted if such a thing is happening in any of the colleges. "As far as we are concerned that is not happening and cannot happen here," Molutsi said. TEC is charged with registering and supervising private colleges in the country.
