Teacher thanks God as court scraps his sentence

FRANCISTOWN: A former primary school teacher breathed a sigh of relief and thanked the Almighty after a magistrate court here on Wednesday ruled that his defilement sentences should run concurrently.

The accused, an ex-teacher at Mabesekwa Primary School in the Central Administrative District, was found guilty of defiling two girls at his former school in July 14, 2007.The magistrate court then sentenced him to 10 years in jail for the first offence in September 10 in 2007.When the accused appeared in court to be sentenced for the second offence, Regional Magistrate North Lorraine Makati-Lesang ruled that his sentences should run concurrently. The accused had earlier on in mitigation told the magistrate that he was left with only 40 days to complete the first sentence.

He also asked the court to be lenient with him because he felt prejudiced by the court's decision to initially try him for the offences separately. He said: "I am left with a few days to enjoy my freedom outside jail. I pray that my sentences should run concurrently so that I may go home and continue with my life.  "The second offence has emotionally and psychologically tormented me ever since I was sentenced to prison in September, 2007."In her ruling, the magistrate seemed to temper justice with mercy as she considered what the accused said in his mitigation. She accordingly found the accused guilty as charged but said that his sentences would run concurrently.
