Teacher murdered in Masunga

FRANCISTOWN: A 30-year old Physical Science teacher at Masunga Senior Secondary School of was murdered by unknown assailants after robbing him of some valuables on Wednesday evening, police have said.

"The teacher was found dead at the teachers' quarters where he was apparently attacked and hit with a blunt object," the commander of Masunga Police Station, Superintendent Hendrick Mmipi, told Mmegi yesterday. Mmipi ruled out suicide, saying his officers were investigating a case of murder which must have occurred when the deceased tried to resist his assailant(s)."We suspect that the deceased was hit with a blunt object before the assailants went away with a laptop which is believed to be the only missing valuable so far," Mmipi said. Police estimate that the incident took place around 11pm.In response to a question, Mmipi said so far there was no evidence that the deceased, who is from Zambia, had any altercation with anyone.

The Zambian's murder is the second homicide in as many months in the North East District. An old man was killed at farmlands near Zwenshambe Village, a few kilometres from Masunga, before he was robbed of some valuables last March."While these types of cases do not occur regularly, we have to say that they are disturbing," Mmipi said. The police said they knew nothing about a rumour doing the rounds at Masunga Senior Secondary School that the deceased had words with a certain man he knew before he met his death. "We are not aware of such a rumour," Mmipi said. "But we will follow any lead.Information reaching Mmegi is that the deceased was attacked when his housemate was at another house watching a UEFA Cup final match. Masunga, which lies near the border with Zimbabwe, has a problem with illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country.
