Targeted charity for student with sclerosis

A group of students at the Botswana Accountancy College (BAC) are to launch Project Thuso, a charity to assist a young BAC student afflicted with multiple sclerosis (MS) a chronic, inflammatory disease of the central nervous system.

The student, Goitsemang Merafe, was diagnosed with MS at South Africa's Garden City Clinic in 2005. Merafe says he was told he was the first black male to be diagnosed with MS at the clinic and a donation of injections was offered to sustain him for a month. "I was back to normal for a while," he says.

Before he was diagnosed, Merafe had been suffering from fatigue, short-term memory and weakness in the limbs, especially the left leg. The condition has left him unable to walk unaided, relying on crutches each time he stands up. Speaking from his home in Francistown, Merafe says he can just about manage to get around in the house.
Fortunately for the student, who is doing a foundation course for AAT, distances between his classrooms at the BAC are not very long.
