The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has appointed Justice Abednego Tafa as Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) with effect from August 2, 2012.

Justice Tafa replaces Justice Monametsi Steve Gaongalelwe, who has been appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal. Section 65(A) of the Constitution of Botswana provides for the Chairman of the IEC to be a High Court Judge. A JSC statement says Tafa obtained his LLB from the University of Botswana and Swaziland in 1978 and then worked as a State Counsel for two years.  In 1980, he entered private practice and stayed there until 1999 when he was appointed Deputy Attorney General.  In 2003, Tafa again returned to private practice until 2005 when he was appointed to the High Court bench.  From 2003 to 2007, he was an ordinary member of the IEC and headed Botswana's legal team at The Hague in the Sedudu Island
