Suspected Serial Cattle Thief Dodges Trial

The Minister for Defence, Justice and Security Ndelu Seretse has told Parliament that he is aware of a suspected habitual cattle thief who has been operating in Lentsweletau since 2003.

He said yesterday that the man who has over 30 stock-theft cases pending in court has fallen ill and has been released on bail to recover. The suspect has cases pending before magistrates' courts dating back to November 2003.  Most of the alleged offences were committed in Kgatleng and Kweneng districts.

Seretse said that the suspect was arrested in November 2003 and arraigned in court the same month for one count. "Investigations carried out during this time revealed a further 15 counts which were added to the charge sheet," he said.
