A survey by the Ministry of Health in 2007 has confirmed that binge-drinking is rife in Botswana. The survey found that the problem cuts across gender.

It shows that that 54.1 percent of males and 51.8 percent of females have had more than the recommended amount of alcohol in one week. A non-communicable diseases officer at the ministry, Helus Medhin told Mmegi that the recommended standard drink is 10 grams of pure alcohol in a day. This is equivalent to one glass of wine, a bottle or can of beer or a tot of hard stuff in a day.

He said that the recommended amount for women is not more than four glasses of wine in a week while men should not take more than five glasses of wine or beer in a week. He said that a person who takes alcohol the whole week is categorised as a hazardous or harmful drinker. He stated that the survey population was 4,000 people of which 72.6 percent did not drink.
