Selebi-Phikwe CID boss, Assistant Superintendent, Marvel Langa told Mmegi that three suspects who were driving the vehicle were arrested in Zimbabwe after a tip-off. Two of the suspects are Zimbabweans while one is a Motswana. Langa said that the Motswana suspect, Moses Moyo was born in Palapye to a Motswana mother and a Zimbabwean father. Investigations have revealed that Moyo is now staying in Zimbabwe and using Zimbabwean emergency travel documents. "Moyo is also wanted by the Serious Crime Squad in Gaborone on motor vehicle theft suspicions over a police vehicle that was found abandoned at Ramokgwebana border gate. The suspects will appear in court on March 7 in Zimbabwe. It is going to be difficult for the suspects to be extradited to Botswana because the two countries do not have an extradition agreement," said Langa.
So far he said the police have recovered a BMW stolen in Selebi-Phikwe, which was found abandoned on a road.An Isuzu pick-up stolen from the town has not been found. Langa said vehicles stolen from Selebi-Phikwe are taken to Zimbabwe through the Kazungula border crossing because the criminals have realised there are no police patrols at the crossing. He said the vehicles go through the Ngwasha gate along the Nata-Kasane road. He announced that a police roadblock has been mounted at Gojwane junction to deal with the problem. Langa called on residents of Selebi-Phikwe to ensure the security of their vehicles by making sure that the gates to their houses are locked at night because it is clear the thieves strike early in the morning. He stated that the police would intensify their patrols and stop and search operations. He said the police will stop anybody driving in the early hours of the morning and such motorists must have a good explanation for being on the road at such a time.
