Stage set for Zim's make-or-break elections

HARARE: All is now set for Zimbabwe's July 31 harmonised elections this week as all the political parties are wrapping up their campaigns over the weekend.

All in all the going has been smooth apart from the hate speeches and negative public media coverage which gave more publicity to the ruling ZANU-PF but demonised the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).The African Union (AU) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) high-level election observers have already jetted into the country for the July 31, 2013 balloting. But the US and the UK, the Western allies not invited to observe the elections, will do so by keeping their ears to the ground.

The Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC) has announced that the printing of ballot papers is through. So the die is cast and everyone hopes eligible Zimbabwean voters will turn up in their thousands to vote for their leaders who shall deliver them to a new era of social and economic prosperity. As the campaign period reached its peak on July 12, the Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe threw herself into the campaign ring at Nzvimbo Secondary School in Chiweshe to support her husband President Robert Mugabe by delivering a scathing attack on opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai. She is alleged to have unleashed her maximum venom of female emotions as she lampooned MDC president Tsvangirai in an unplanned speech. She described the Prime Minister as an 'ugly man of loose morals who cannot be a president of Zimbabwe'.
