Stage set for crucial BDP congress

Molepolole will host the crucial Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) congress, exactly a month after the Botswana National Front (BNF) held a controversial special congress in the village. The BDP secretariat has already moved to Molepolole for the congress. The party is scheduled to amend its constitution and elect a new central committee that will lead it to the 2009 general elections.

BDP executive secretary Dr Comma Serema said that the 57 constituencies have delegated a chairperson and secretary to the congress. The party has invited the 12 regions to delegate 24 representatives to Molepolole. For an hour, the packed Molepolole college of Education hall where the event is to take place, will debate the proposed constitutional amendments. Another hour has been reserved to allow delegates to table motions and resolutions from the BDP Women and Youth Wings.

The youth and women wings have each submitted six names to represent them during the voting of a new central committee. Serema revealed that a number of sub committees within the party have been invited to come and serve as observers. The party has sought the assistance of the council of elders to observe the elections. "Besides the sub-committees, we do have guests that are to observe the elections," said Serema.
