Special constables struggle to make the cut

The Commissioner of Police, Keabetswe Makgophe, has said that special constables are not joining the main service in sufficient numbers because of inferior qualifications.

He told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) yesterday that in the past two years, only 300 special constables have joined the mainstream service. He explained that the police academy has even lowered its cut-off grade from 30 to 26 points, but most special constables are battling to make the cut.

“We have entry requirements and unfortunately most of the special constables we have recruited do not meet the set criteria,” he told the committee.
