South Africans Won't Hang In Botswana

A South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) radio station reported on Friday that Botswana has agreed with South Africa that its citizens will not be hanged here.

It said that SA citizens facing serious offences such as murder, which carries the death penalty may not be hanged. The report came at a time when three South African citizens are scheduled to appear before the High Court in Lobatse facing charges of murder and armed robbery. The three - Benson Keganne, Kagiso William Sebi, and Amos Suna Moloi, are accused of murdering Gloria Mahoe at Maisane lands near Molapowabojang on March 10, 2001. According to police records, the woman gave the three men a ride and on the way they robbed and shot her.

They took her vehicle and used it in another armed robbery at Mmathethe village.  The three were arrested a short time after the offence and have been in custody since then. Sources in the legal fraternity say that it is possible for two countries to sign an agreement on a case-by-case basis.  Meanwhile, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Kabo Leinaeng, who is prosecuting, revealled that the state intends to call 20 witnesses, among them South African police officers who arrested the three.  The case will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Two South African citizens, Marietta Bosch and Lehlohonolo Kobedi were hanged in 2001 and 2006 and Michael Molefhe is on death row after the Lobatse High Court convicted and sentenced him to death.  South Africa has abolished the death sentence.
