Soldiers display poor marksmanship

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Defence Logistics Commander, Colonel William Jansen, has raised concern about the results that were registered at the just ended BDF annual Inter-unit Firing Competition.

Jansen told Mmegi in an interview that the competition was meant to improve weapons handling skills among officers and other ranks in the BDF with the view to maintaining small arms skill for BDF soldiers at all the time.He added that the competition was also meant to give the soldiers a competitive spirit. He said that when soldiers train together, they become a team and will always support each other.Jansen said the competition was carried over a range of 300 metres due to various reasons such as cost restrictions because the equipment that they used was expensive. He said that he was concerned about the poor results that were scored.

"In a maximum of 100 marks under the laying category we had a few people achieving the total score. It is a sign that something is not being done right. As the leadership of the BDF, we have to find out the problem and solve it," said Jansen. He stated that they had been conducting the competition for years now and for others it had become monotonous and that meant more challenges must be added to make it more interesting.Meanwhile, Jansen told the soldiers in his keynote address that the competition was an operational environment and should be treated as that.
