Societies face the axe

The Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs is on the verge of halting the operations of more than 600 societies for defying a call to submit their annual returns and financial audits to the Registrar of Societies.

About 686 registered burial societies, sporting clubs, religious organisations and other community associations across the country have failed to comply with the Societies Act by submitting their audits and returns to the ministry. The ministry has since published the names of the defaulting associations and gave then 21 days to normalise their financial books.

Societies under the hammer include Botswana Editors Forum, Botswana Institute of Engineers, Botswana Teachers Union, Tshipidi Badiri Builders Association, Botswana Retired Nurses Association and Botswana Magistrates and Judges Association.
