Sewage smell haunts residents

MAHALAPYE: Residents of Xhosa1 have raised concern over the bad stench that comes from the village's sewage ponds amid fears of disease infection.

The sewage ponds located in the eastern part of Mahalapye have affected the residents so much that they have taken the matter up with municipal authorities, but to no avail.  The residents say they live in constant torment of the bad odour that comes from the waste ponds, especially when the wind blows towards their residential areas.

One resident who lives not far from the ponds said the stench from the ponds is so bad that at times they cannot even eat their food.  " Apart from the fact that the bad smell can bring infectious diseases to us, at times, we cannot even eat nor enjoy our food because of this terrible smell.  We have raised complaints with the authorities, but they have done nothing to arrest the situation," the young lady said.
