Seven countries in BDF peacekeeping training exercise

A three-week peacekeeping training exercise for the Botswana Defence Force ends in a ceremony at the Botswana Public Officers College in Gaborone today.

Selected soldiers underwent a Tactical Operations Course (TOSC 22) provided by the BDF in conjunction with the Canadian Directorate of Military Training and Cooperation. According to the BDF's Commandant for the Peace Support Training Centre, Edson Molale, this was the third such training in Botswana after the first one in May 2011 and the second in November 2012. Molale said TOSC concentrates on immediate and senior levels of operation with a focus on African Union Standard Operating Procedures and the UNAMID Mission in Sudan. Trainees are exposed to scenarios that simulate situations that they may encounter in real life so that at any time a United Nations resolution is taken for peacekeeping, they are ready for the task.

"The UN operations involve a couple of armed forces and police, hence the invitation of sister countries to take part in the training," said Molale. He added that the environment signified by syndicates in the training rooms was a true reflection of what will be there in reality. In addition to Botswana, countries that sent participants to TOSC 22 are Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Djibouti, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda, Namibia and Zambia. The participants are prospects for selection to participate in the United Nations or African Union Missions in Africa.
