Seretse hails spies in crime war

The Minister of Defence, Justice and Security Dikgakgamatso Seretse has hailed the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) for clamping down on crime. Seretse praised DISS shortly before Parliament approved the budget for the Office of the President, which has two ministries - Presidential Affairs and Public Administration; and Defence, Justice and Security. The minister found himself under attack as MPs questioned reports of abduction of University of Botswana (UB) student leader, Kagiso Thutlwe, allegations of torture and illegal interrogation methods by DIS agents.

Seretse stated that his ministry is willing to investigate the allegations against the DIS once it receives evidence of wrongdoing. He said claims of torture of police officers by DIS operatives are still being investigated and once the probe is complete, government will give feedback.

He said that despite the criticism of DIS, he has received reports that the government's spy organ is doing a very good job and saving the country millions. He cited the fraud at Central Medical Stores (CMS) stating that this was a clear example that DIS is effective.
