Salvinia molester under control

The Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Crown Prince Haakon of Norway was recently told that the free-floating fern, salvinia molester has been brought under control.

This happened during the prince's tour of the Okavango Delta to witness the ongoing efforts to combat the spread of the molester.

The weed is notorious for deoxygenating the water beneath it, which kills some living organisms in the process. The UNDP, together with the government of Botswana, is working in collaboration with three lodges in the Moremi Game Reserve to counter the challenge of this fast spreading molester known as mochimbamo by locals. According to Ramogaupi Gaborekwe, a senior natural resources officer based in Maun, the fern is one of the worst invasive aquatic weeds and it is believed to have originated in South America, along the Amazon River.
