Rotavirus vaccination not part of infant immunization

The Botswana government still does not provide the rotavirus vaccination as part of its infant immunisation schedule, despite a history of a diarrhoea outbreak that claimed 450 lives in 2006. The recent outbreak has claimed 67 children in just five weeks.

The country is currently embroiled in a diarrhoea outbreak with 5,580 cases reported and 67 children under the age of five already dead in just five weeks.

This is a similar case to the 2006 diarrhoea outbreak in which over 20,000 cases were recorded.  Speaking to Mmegi in a telephone interview yesterday, acting director in the department of public health Setshwano Mokgweetsinyana said there are a number of vaccinations that are not included in the immunisation schedule.
