Retrenchments Threaten Legacy Of IDM Boss

It is only a few weeks before the four-year tenure of director of the three-nation Institute for Development Management (IDM) Audrey Kgosidintsi comes to an end. The IDM boss leaves at a time when staff morale is at its lowest especially at the Gaborone branch. The IDM staff are disgruntled because of a looming retrenchment and Kgosidintsi fears this might undermine her legacy.

She says poor communication and consultations are to blame for the confusion that reign among IDM workers in the three branches in Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho. The workers fear they will get peanuts when they are retrenched anytime after the IDM board meeting in Swaziland next month. Kgosidintsi is hopeful that with better consultation and communication of the organisation's position on the issue, the restructuring process could be implemented smoothly.

She acknowledges that when retrenchment is looming, there is bound to be anxiety and fear. "It is not a nice thing to do. Retrenchment is about people's livelihoods. We understand these things," says Kgosidintsi.
