Residents accuse councillor of rip-off

Residents of Old Naledi in Gaborone have accused Botswana National Front (BNF) councillor Ruth Kgafela of ripping-off the government. The Babusi Ward councillor has earned the wrath of the residents for supplying poor quality clothing at a very high cost to orphans after winning a government tender.

At a meeting yesterday addressed by Gaborone City Council (GCC) Department of Social and Community Development (SCD), the residents wanted to return the clothes. The residents accused Kgafela, who was not present at the meeting, of purchasing clothes from Chinese shops and other cheap stores. They were concerned how the councillor won the tender when she does not have a clothing shop.

When contacted for comment, Kgafela confirmed receiving complaints from some residents of Old Naledi.  She said that she won the tender early this year after presenting samples to the tendering board. She said the samples were from chain stores like Jet, Mr Price and Fashion World. Kgafela who is member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee of GCC said that she did not have influence in the decision to award her the tender.
