Research links sex work with status

FRANCISTOWN: Some women undertake commercial sex work to have status and look like those who have formal jobs, a study has shown.Research on HIV needs assessment of female sex workers in Botswana indicate that the women want to gain status by purchasing small luxury items for themselves and their children with money earned through commercial sex.

 

The study says earnings from sex work helped women to improve their standard of living, look better, have smart clothes and support their children.The women got financial autonomy from sex work. They kept their work a secret in order to maintain their self-esteem, security and dignity due to tradition.
