Repeat Offender Rebukes Magistrate

FRANCISTOWN: An unrepentant serial burglar rebuked chief magistrate Kenneth Obeng after the latter refused to order his conviction of burglary and stealing to run concurrently with his previous conviction of robbery.

After the elderly Obeng handed down six years for the first count of burglary and four years for the second count of stealing from a dwelling house in Tonota on Dallas Benoni, the youthful Benoni pleaded with Obeng to order the sentences to run concurrently with his previous six years' imprisonment for robbery.

When the magistrate remained unmoved, 22-year old Benoni shouted in Setswana: "Tsamaya monna, o tla' tsamaya ko Ghana o ntse jalo," which roughly translates into "Bugger off here, you'll go back to Ghana just the way you are."
Benoni's angry outburst dismayed a few people seating in the gallery. Magistrate Obeng is a Motswana of Ghanaian origin.
