Regulation of private school fees motion passed

Parliament on Friday passed the motion tabled by the Francistown Member of Parliament, Wynter Mmolotsi, which called for the regulation of fees charged by private educational institutions. In his motion, Mmolotsi called on government to develop, in consultation with stakeholders, a way to regulate fees charged by private schools.

Mmolotsi's argument calling for private school fees to be regulated is informed by the fact that each institution has its own fees which are  increased annually regardless of  high inflation rates and high costs of living. He appealed for government to come up with a fee range for categories A, B and C schools saying this would depend on the quality of education provided by such schools, the infrastructure they have and the  teachers' qualifications.

The Francistown MP also raised a concern that if private schools are not regulated, they will end up educating only foreigners since the majority of Batswana cannot afford to send their children there. He believes  that private schools play an important role in education in Botswana by providing quality education and assisting government schools; however, he said regulating these schools would be ideal.
