Botswana's high maternal mortality rate could be reduced by family support and companionship, says Tumie Ramsden of the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA).

Speaking during a tour of Princess Marina Hospital's maternity wards with the MP for Gaborone Central, Dumelang Shaleshando, yesterday, Ramsden said: "The aim of this tour is for us to see and feel what the hospitals are going through. We are here to evaluate both the hospital and patients' needs."  She said that support from family members, husbands or companions is important and useful for pregnant women.  "Research shows that women who are given support by their partners tend to survive and avoid complications as their partners know what they want and when they are not fine," she said.

Antenatal classes launched at Princess Marina this year shows progress as both partners are taught some exercises which they can do together. Ramsden said the classes help couples to be closer to each other as a man can also support and know what is going on in their partners' life during pregnancy.
