Problems rock 'No Mathata' Filling Station

It was not business as usual at 'No Mathata' Filling Station in Maruapula when employees downed tools yesterday demanding better wages. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the employees accused the management of abusing and undermining them

They said they were promised a wage increase at the beginning of the year but until now this has not been fulfilled. They said every month, the management keep postponing the payment of increased wages and to make matters worse, they have been slapped with a salary cut.

The employees are demanding a 15 percent pay increase but the management offered 10 percent with the rider that it will be based on individual performance. They said that they were ready to accept a general 10 percent increment but the management was not willing to listen to them.  The employees added that the management has threatened to fire them if they do not want to work. "They told us that it was a matter of 'take it or leave it'.  They are abusing us and calling us thieves," one of the workers said. She stated that the discriminatory increment will disadvantage newcomers.
