Poor Standard Of Debates

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Pono Moatlhodi has expressed disappointment at the emerging trend in Parliament where Members of Parliament (MPs) refuse to yield for their colleagues seeking clarification.

In an interview with the Monitor on Friday on parliamentary debates on the State of the Nation address that commenced two weeks ago, Moatlhodi said that he has also observed, with disgust, MPs refusing to yield for their colleagues just because the Standing Orders give them the right to refuse. He said that this "kills lively debates and exchange of ideas".

Most of the perpetrators are the newly appointed MPs and Moatlhodi suspects that they have been misled by former MPs. "I think their old colleagues have wrongly advised them," he said. He added that during the orientation, MPs showed that they understood what they were told.  However, he said that after warning one MP on Tuesday, who also refused to yield for others, there was a slight improvement. He said that he would definitely take the matter up with the All-party Caucus.
