Political interference in VDCs

Although it is rare to find a politician who agrees that there is politicking ahead of VDC elections, evidence on the ground shows there is and that much intermeddling continues in the affairs of these crucial community organisations, writes EDWARD BULE

There is a widespread belief that politicians manipulate Village Development Committees (VDC) and their urban counterparts, Ward Development Committees (WDC).

However, it is extremely difficult to find a politician who agrees that the perception is based on fact. Two years after independence, a Presidential directive was issued to establish VDC's. Much later, WDC's were formed for the urban areas.
