Police probe women over abortion

FRANCISTOWN: Police are investigating a number of young women on suspicion of procuring abortions. Gerald Police Station Commander, Superintendent Motsholathebe Mothibi says that the issue is now in court and the suspects are already out on bail.

Boitumelo Onkabetse, Joyce Tshekedi and others have been arraigned in court to face charges of procuring abortion. Mothibi said that police investigations on reports that Tshekedi had aborted led them to Onkabetse who is said to have performed the operation. "Police acted on a tip-off that Tshekedi had performed abortion and she later led us to Onkabetse and to the scene where the foetus had been dumped," he said.

Mothibi added that the police received a report on January 13 and the suspects were arrested on January 14. He said that during their investigations, they found that 28-year-old Tshekedi who stays in Tutume Village had gone to Tati Siding Village to terminate her pregnancy. "Unfortunately for her, people in Tutume already knew she was pregnant, so when she came back not pregnant, they tipped the police and she was questioned," said Mothibi.
