Police foil poaching syndicate

The usual battle between often ill-equipped Department of Wildlife and National Parks and insolent poaching syndicates could gain traction following the arrest of multinationals alleged to be involved in illicit ivory smuggling between Botswana and neighbouring countries.

Mmegi is reliably informed that two suspects belonging to known poaching syndicates were recently arrested at Motopi in Boteti as they tried to make their way to Gaborone with a consignment of ivory.

One of the two men is of Zambian origin while the other is a Motswana. The Commander of Rakops Police Station, Superintendent Makgophe Oageng, has confirmed that syndicate members who had been under surveillance were apprehended while transporting illegal ivory in a truck belonging to a courier company.
