Police doubt nationality of imbecile accused

FRANCISTOWN: The prosecution in the case in which a 19-year-old Tonota man is alleged to have defiled an imbecile lady in Tonota on October 17, 2012 has cast skepticism over his true nationality.

The state alleges that the accused committed the offence when he knew that the complainant was not normal. It emerged last Thursday when the accused appeared in court to get a ruling concerning his bail application that the accused possessed both Botswana's Identity Card (Omang) and Zimbabwe Identity Card.

State prosecutor Paul Chaluza of Tonota Police Station told Magistrate Mpho Molema that the accused's mother was helping immigration officials with how the accused came to possess two identity cards of different countries. He said the police suspect that the mother may have fraudulently acquired the Botswana Omang for the accused. The court also heard that the accused's mother spent time at the Francistown Centre for Illegal Immigrants because the police also suspected that she may have acquired her Omang fraudulently but was later released.
