Police chiefs warn of spiraling crime

Winter is gone and summer has arrived. Unfortunately for law-abiding citizens, some criminals have come out of hibernation to wreak havoc in the streets of Gaborone. Recently, Mmegi spoke to all station commanders in and around the city to find out about the exploits of these thugs and their favourite haunts in their operational areas.

Urban Police Station commander Superintendent Ringo Batshabeng said one of the most crime-prone spots in his policing area is the bush between the Riverwalk Mall and Fairgrounds Holding where thugs waylay both motorists and pedestrians.


Batshabeng said another worrisome area is the 'Old Naledi robots' where both motorists and pedestrians are targeted. The station commander further explained that during winter, some robbers practiced what is called 'smash and grab' where a vehicle's windshield is broken with a stone or brick as it stops at the robots and then valuables are 'grabbed' from inside.
