It was high noon for striking Limkokwing University students as officers from Number 13 Police District pounced on them with teargas and batons at midday yesterday.

The placard-toting students were on a class boycott and had assembled in front of the campus chanting to protest the university's suspension of the Student Representative Council (SRC). According to a nearby vendor, the students had converged at the entrance earlier in the morning singing protest songs. The woman told Mmegi that the police baton-charged the students as soon as they arrived on the scene. The students reacted by throwing stones at the police, and a helicopter appeared out of nowhere spewing teargas.

Contacted for comment, Officer Commanding Number 13 District, Senior Superintendent Dintwe Dintwe, said he was not sure how many students were arrested. However, one of the officers who was deployed to the scene put the number at six.
