Peer education rolls to Phikwe schools

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Gold Development Agency has funded BOCAIP to conduct a peer education programme in junior secondary schools around Selebi-Phikwe. An agreement has been siged between BOCAIP, Ministry of Education and Gold Development Agency that the programme be implemented in Selebi-Phikwe.

Peer Education Programme manager Rebecca Nkalanga has indicated that the programme has been piloted in Gaborone by Salvation Army Psycho-Social Support Initiative (SAPSSI) and in Francistown by Youth Health Organisation (YOHO). She noted that basically, they believe that the spread of HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country and the future of the continent largely depend on a response to investment in young people.

She said it is necessary to roll out the programme to Selebi-Phikwe given its high HIV/AIDS prevalence rate. "By establishing in this town, we hope to reduce the rate of infection especially targeting the youth. We hope we will get support from everybody in town and even parents."
