Parents urged to play leading role in education

ORAPA: The Executive Secretary of the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC), Serara Moahi, urged parents to play a leading role in the education of their children during a top achievers celebration held recently at Orapa Junior Secondary School.

The school attained a 99.6 percent pass rate in the 2011 Junior Certificate results.Moahi noted that the majority of students across the country fail because they lack the support of their parents. She also posited that parents still wrongly perceive that the education of their children is solely the responsibility of teachers.

"You should shy away from the perception that the education of your children is the responsibility of teachers. You must have a positive influence in the education of your children. They need you to lift them up and show faith in their ability when they are down. Teachers alone cannot succeed playing this role without your input," she said. She advised parents to voluntarily engage teachers regarding the performance of their children, as that could help both teachers and parents to derive ways to help students to learn effectively.
