FRANCISTOWN: The Francistown City Council (FCC) is reportedly considering reinstating former city mayor Ephraim Maiketso.

The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) Francistown Central councillor, Maiketso was ousted from his position last September following a controversial motion of no confidence in him. Satellite North legislator James Kgalajwe of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) was subsequently appointed mayor. Following the landmark Mukokomani Court of Appeal ruling in February that declared that a mayor cannot be removed from office through a motion of no confidence, Maiketso immediately wrote to the FCC demanding his reinstatement. It has transpired that about a week ago, Maiketso wrote another letter notifying the city council of his intention to sue if he is not reinstated.

The FCC reportedly has 30 days to respond to Maiketso's letter. There is reportedly a lot of soul searching at the City Hall. A high-ranking source at FCC this week informed Mmegi that the city council was contemplating giving Maiketso back his position."Following the precedence set by the Court of Appeal early this year, the FCC does not fancy its chances of winning their case against Maiketso they believe he is in the right direction.
