Nurses not restricted to seek employment in SADC-MoH

There is no agreement between Botswana and South Africa that bars either country from recruiting nurses from the other, the Ministry of Health has said.

Dismissing suggestions that Botswana has made agreements that restrict locally trained nurses from seeking employment in other SADC countries, principal public relations officer at the Ministry of Health, Tebogo Moisakamo, said Botswana-registered nurses are free to seek employment in South Africa. A generic letter given to nurses who applied for work in South Africa states that the nurses cannot be hired in that country because of 'restrictions to appoint from developing countries, unless there are firm government-to-government recruitment agreements'.

Moisakamo said that Botswana has never made any agreements with any country restraining the movement of nurses trained and registered in Botswana to seek employment in another country, especially South Africa.
