NGOs wary of govt 'unity' overtures

Non-Governmental Organisations are wary of the government's motive behind its proposal for the two to engage in partnership, saying they suspect that the government wants to take away their autonomy and silence them and kill the voice of the voiceless they have been trying to raise.

This arose at a recent two-day workshop in Gaborone whose objective was to review the 2004 National Policy on Non-Governmental Organisations.

The government wants to establish an NGO Council that will advise it on the implementation of the policy and all matters pertaining to it. The council, which will have 19 members, will operate under the auspices of the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs.
