MPs seek urgent amendment of Public Service Act

Members of the Parliamentary Labour Relations Committee say the new Public Service Act needs to be amended as a matter of urgency to cure discontent that exists between government and the trade unions, big and small.

In a press briefing yesterday, members of the committee, Slumber Tsogwane (chair), Nehemiah Modubule, Prince Maele and Dumelang Saleshando said Sections 46 and 51(2k) need to harmonised to avoid the confusion they are causing. Section 46 reads: "A trade union which is representative of one third of the employees engaged in the same trade as members of same union, may apply to the director for recognition for purposes of collective bargaining".

The MPs say 51(2k) contradicts it in that it requires a threshold for the admission of trade union parties to the bargaining council and it disadvantages smaller unions.
