MP Wants Integrated Transport Policy

The MP for Tswapong South, Oreeditse Molebatsi has accused the Ministry of Works and Transport of neglecting its duty by failing to formulate an Integrated Transport Policy to guide government.

He said with the policy in place, the government will know how to go about problems in the sector unlike the current situation where Botswana Railways is making a loss yet the state keeps pumping money into it. The government plans to inject over P500 million to bail-out Botswana Railways (BR). "I have been talking about this policy for the past four years and the minister kept on postponing the issue. Now this year, nothing is said about it in the budget," he said.

He argued that spending P500 million on BR is like throwing money into a pit. He said that since the country is belt-tightening, government should identify the main causes of wastage in the civil service. The MP said that senior civil servants do all they can to get overtime claims. "When they come for a workshop in Gaborone from Mahalapye, they drive at 120kph but when they go back they drive at 60kph so that they can get overtime claims," he said. He appealed to government to build sports facilities in rural areas for children to develop their sporting skills.
