MP blames rising corruption on expatriates

Tswapong South legislator, Oreeditse Molebatsi has attributed Botswana's rising corruption to the hiring of expatriates from central Africa.

He said there is a tendency in government to give key positions to foreigners especially in district councils. He asserted that this breeds corruption and something must be done. He said there is jealousy among citizens to the extent that they have resorted to hiring foreigners instead of locals even for jobs where locals are qualified. Molebatsi was speaking in Parliament in response to President Ian Khama's State of the Nation Address.

He hailed the government's position on the Zimbabwean crisis. He accused some Zimbabweans who have taken up jobs in Botswana of peddling lies such as recent reports that Botswana was training MDC youth for combat. He pointed out that people who were insulting Batswana and saying that the country's nationals are outnumbered by goats were ZANU-PF operatives residing in the country. Molebatsi caused laughter when he said that he did not see why Bank of Botswana hired a Zimbabwean to be a Chief Security Officer when a retired citizen police officer can easily do the job.
