Moves to oust Moupo dismissed

As political parties around the country are 'saddling up their horses' in preparation for the 2009 general elections, reports reaching Mmegi say some members of the Botswana National Front (BNF) in the Gaborone West North constituency are lobbying against party president Otsweletse Moupo's running in the elections.

On the other hand, a member of the BNF central committee has warned "wayward characters" that the party will not hesitate to take action against them.
Close sources say the constituency committee is planning to call a meeting with the party executive at which the committee will ask the MP for Gaborone West North to pull out.

Despite no reasons being given, it is understood that many fear Moupo's candidature could cost the party the constituency.
But insiders also say BNF councillors within the constituency are divided over the issue. A BNF councillor, who wants to remain anonymous, says there is general concern in the constituency that Moupo is likely to lose the elections. "If he stands, the party will lose," the councilor says.
