Moupo chews Mogae speech

Leader of the opposition and Botswana National Front president, Otsweletse Moupo was first to respond to President Festus Mogae's opening of Parliament speech yesterday saying that De Beers has long denied that Botswana could benefit from diamond beneficiation.

"For 30 years the government allowed itself to be hoodwinked by De Beers into believing that this country is not suited to any diamond processing leading to huge loss of income, loss of opportunity to develop diamond processing skills and compete in the global market and it undermined our country's capacity to create jobs for its people. 

"It cannot be the same company which has effectively sabotaged our industrialisation process which can be relied upon to drive the beneficiation process," he argued.
