Mother tongue debate flares again

The question of the use of mother tongue as a medium of instruction in schools returned to Parliament on Friday in a Gilson Saleshando sponsored motion that divided the house.

The Selebi-Phikwe West MP moved that government should make education more inclusive by introducing mother tongue languages as the medium of instruction in primary school of communities where Setswana is a second language by 2015.

Saleshando argued that the imposition of Setswana as the only medium of instruction in primary school has contributed significantly to a high level of dropouts and failures among non-Tswana speaking children. He argued further that the government has, since independence, allocated economic resources to the exclusive promotion of English and Setswama.
