Mother testifies in child rape case

FRANCISTOWN: The ordeal was too much for Masimo Kitso*. Tearfully, she gave testimony during her daughter's rape case at the Magistrates' Court on Monday. Her agony was compounded by the fact that she had come face to face with the rape suspect. The suspect sat impassively in the dock as prosecutor, Inspector Paul Chaluza fired questions at a red-eyed Kitso.

Meanwhile, her nine-year-old primary school girl and alleged rape victim seemed oblivious of the anguish her mother was going through as she pranced about in a playful mood with her peers outside the courtroom.

During re-examination by Chaluza, Kitso disclosed how in April last year, her teenage daughter came rushing in to break the news that her younger sibling had been raped.
"It was in the afternoon between 5pm and 6pm and I was at a neighbour's house when my older daughter came rushing in to tell me that her younger sister had been raped. She said she was positive it was a Zimbabwean man who always passed by our home. At home I found my younger daughter crying. After she had mustered some courage, she told me that she had been raped by a Zimbabwean man who always passed by our home," she said.
