Ray Molomo, the Chairman of the Task Force set up by Local Government Minister Peter Siele to investigate and recommend the way forward in the Bobirwa chieftaincy dispute, says they should submit their findings by March 23.

On Saturday the team, comprising former Speaker of the National Assembly Molomo, researcher Dr Rodgers Molefhi, Bangwato royal Shaw Mokgadi, and former permanent secretary and diplomat Kingsley Sebele, was in Gaborone, entertaining interviews and submissions.  The media was not invited to the hearings. The hearings have so far been conducted in Bobirwa villages of Bobonong, Tsetsebjwe, Mathathathane, Molalatau, Gobojango and Semolale. Last week the hearings were held in Gaborone where they continued into the weekend. Bobirwa chieftaincy is in dispute after two challengers - Adam Sekoba and a certain O. Serumola - claimed they were the rightful heirs. The current chief, Mmirwa Malema, now in his 80s, was elected in the early 70s, but some claimants have over the years approached the Bangwato authorities, under whom Babirwa fall, to change the status quo.

Some claimants have even questioned why an elected chief should remain in office when he is approaching his 80s, contrary to Chieftainship Act provisions.
