MOH steers clear of medical aid-doctors tiff

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has declined to comment on the current tussle between private health service providers and medical aid societies. Speaking at a National AIDS Council (NAC) meeting in Gaborone over the weekend, the Minister of Health, Dr Reverend John Seakgosing said it would be unfair to expect him to comment on the matter.

"Discussions are going on. We will comment when the time comes for us to comment," he said,"but we are an interested party in the matter". He, however, said that he is not sure what the ministry's comment would be.

"It will depend on what would have been agreed," he said. Private health service providers and medical aid societies have been publicly haggling over tariffs.  The health service providers want to be free to charge patients more or less than the rates set by medical aid societies.They complain that their costs are too high and have incurred losses over the years thanks to the medical aid societies' uncompetitive rates.
